Our Contribution to Landmark Book on Digital Health in Germany: Focusing on the European Health Data Space

Team SUST is proud to announce the publication of a significant book chapter in the newly released volume, "Digitale Gesundheit in Deutschland – Wo stehen wir und wo müssen wir hinkommen?" (Digital Health in Germany – Where We Stand and Where We Need to Go).

Key Focus: The European Health Data Space (EHDS) and Innovation

Authored by members of the EHDS4ALL consortium, and led by Prof. Hannes Rothe and Daniel Courtney of UDE, the chapter analyzes the profound implications of the new EU Regulation for the European Health Data Space (EHDS), which was adopted in early 2024.

The chapter highlights the EHDS as a major step toward an integrated, values-based data economy in Europe, setting the stage for a multitude of digital innovations.

  • Core Goal: The EHDS aims to create a unified, secure framework for accessing, using, and exchanging health data across the European Union.
  • Key Benefits: This is designed to enhance the quality of patient care, accelerate medical research and development, and boost the efficiency of member state health systems.
  • Foundation: It establishes a legally secure environment for data access, availability, and utilization, while prioritizing data protection and standards.

Opportunities for Digital Innovators and Entrepreneurs

The chapter emphasizes that Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which utilize health data as a core part of their business models, are poised to be the primary beneficiaries and drivers of innovation within this harmonized European data space. The EHDS opens doors for SMEs to leverage health data for new applications and research projects, fostering a unique Innovation Ecosystem for Health Data.

The research also introduces the BMFTR-funded project EHDS4ALL, which is developing a platform-based, digital qualification toolkit. This toolkit is designed to methodically support SMEs in securely and independently establishing innovative products, services, and business models within the European Health Data Space, leveraging newly available data.

Context: A Call to Action for Digital Health in Germany

The broader book, edited by Richard C. Geibel, Ulrich Arnold, addresses the pressing question of how Germany can catch up with other nations in the digitalization of its healthcare system. It provides a strategic overview of the potentials and significant opportunities associated with digital transformation, aiming for a digitalized and sustainable healthcare system that is patient-centered.

The SUST Chair's contribution provides a crucial, forward-looking perspective, making it essential reading for students and academics studying:

  • Digital Ecosystems and Platforms
