We are looking for a Research Assistant working on a Smart Service System for the Empowerment of Girls* of Colour

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) at the Essen Campus, in the Faculty of Computer Science, Chair of Information Systems and Sustainable Supply Chain Management is looking for

The influence of digital technologies on entrepreneurial and societal fields of activity is omnipresent. At the same time, humankind is facing major challenges that give rise to pressure to act and the need for innovation. Under the slogan "Towards X Futures", we reflect on the connections between digital and socioecological transformation at the Chair of Information Systems and Sustainable Supply Chain Management. Through the management of Place Beyond Bytes at the University of Duisburg-Essen, we are also responsible for supporting digital start-up projects. We directly support the development of digital products and services and research their economic, ecological and social impact.

In the "Building Bridges" project, we are strengthening the educational participation of girls* of color from the 10th grade onwards through empowerment and mentoring. To this end, we are developing a smart service system that includes the participatory creation of a context-sensitive toolkit for digital storytelling based on the action design research approach. This "living platform" combines webbased technologies with Machine Learning approaches. Digital narratives of educational biographies can be developed on the platform using audio-visual media. We draw on the project partners' findings from psychology and existing research in information systems research to derive design rules for audio-visual content. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Your tasks:

  • You will design and evaluate a Smart Service System for the empowerment of girls* of color from the 10th grade onwards. You will use an action design research approach.
  • You will develop a web-based platform that enables digital storytelling as a context-sensitive design kit.
  • You will work closely with our project partners from the field of psychology.
  • You carry out research tasks in the fields of digital innovation and digital entrepreneurship.
  • You publish findings from your work in international publication media and conferences. You
    regularly exchange information in national and international networks.
  • You perform project-related teaching duties at the Faculty of Computer Science.

Your profile:

  • Above-average university degree in information systems, or business administration with a standard period of study of at least 8 semesters (i.e., Master's degree)
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following topics: Digital Entrepreneurship, Digital Innovation, Business Modeling, Digital Platforms, Service Systems Engineering, Machine Learning
  • Experience with one or more of the following methods: qualitative-empirical methods (e.g. case study, interviews), explorative-quantitative data analysis (with Stata, Python or R), design science research
  • You work independently.
  • You have a very good command of English (German desirable).
