"Class of Tomorrow": BRYCK STARTUP ALLIANCE Launch Signals a Deep Tech Future for the Ruhr Region
The Ruhr region is rapidly transforming its identity, shifting from its historic foundation in steel to become a powerful Startup Factory for deep tech.
This future-forward vision was the electrifying theme of the recent BRYCK Startup Alliance launch event, "Class of Tomorrow". The energy and conviction at the event have set a clear course: the future isn't a passive destination, but an active construction project.
At the heart of this transformation is the academic community. Professor Hannes Rothe of our Chair presented the #ResearchPush Clusters from the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR), highlighting the pivotal role of universities in driving innovation.
Key Takeaways for Students and Academics
A central theme, echoed in the panel discussion with Prof. Jens Kleesiek (IKIM) and Dr. Maik Ender (Cube 5), is that curiosity for knowledge and cutting-edge technology is the world's most valuable asset. Universities are the ideal environment for tackling crucial questions and building new solutions on the "bleeding edge" of technology.
- The Deep Tech Future Needs ResearchPush: The clusters—in Personal Medicine, Secure and Intelligent Systems, and Future of Materials—are designed to lead industry transformations. For young founders, these clusters are a direct invitation to use groundbreaking university research as the basis for a new startup.
- An Ecosystem Built for You: The Ruhr's academic infrastructure is robust. With 110,000 students (nearly half in MINT fields) and 14,000 scientists across the University Alliance, the talent, knowledge, and resources are abundant. Excellent education and incubation structures are being integrated and harmonized, with support from programs like EXIST and the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Industrie, Klimaschutz und Energie des Landes NRW.
- The Call to Action: Stop Talking, Start Building: The spirit of the launch was one of immediate action. Success stories from startups like Acquaint and KyDo Therapeutics demonstrate that jumping in is the necessary step to turn ideas into reality.
Your Next Step Towards Tomorrow
The message for students is clear: get involved. If you have a problem that keeps you up at night or a technology close to your heart, the platform to make your "TOMORROW" happen is now in place.
